Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has emphasized the strategic importance of stability in Afghanistan for the region, stating that Tehran supports any initiative aimed at establishing an inclusive government in the country. He made the remarks during a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Kyrgyzstan.
Referring to Afghanistan’s role in regional developments, Araghchi said that the country’s stability and security are among the most important shared security and development concerns for SCO member states. He also stressed the need for continued cooperation among regional countries to address common threats.
The Iranian foreign minister stated that effectively combating terrorism, extremism, transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, and illegal migration requires close and coordinated cooperation among regional countries through mechanisms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
He further said that the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks a secure, stable, and developed Afghanistan, and emphasized the importance of ending tensions and conflicts between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting was held on Friday, July 24, in Kyrgyzstan, where foreign ministers of member states discussed key regional and international issues, including developments in Afghanistan.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is an intergovernmental body focused on security, political, and economic cooperation, established in 2001. China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus are permanent members of the organization.
