Amrullah Saleh, former first vice president of Afghanistan, has alleged that some Taliban leaders are involved in corruption with Mirwais Azizi, the head of Azizi Bank.
Saleh said that the corruption and forgery case involving Azizi Bank remains open, and alleged that some of the bank’s partners provided financial support to the Taliban during the previous republican government.
He also described Azizi Bank’s power-generation project as a “media deception,” saying that the claim of generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity is an insult to the intelligence of the Afghan people.
Saleh claims that Azizi Bank does not have sufficient capital for investment and is seeking to profit through low-cost coal extraction contracts.
He further said that some of Azizi’s partners, who he claims were involved in financing the Taliban, are under close scrutiny and that substantial documentation exists in this regard.
Mirwais Azizi has so far not issued any official response to Amrullah Saleh’s allegations.
