David McBride, a former Australian military lawyer and whistleblower who provided the media with classified documents concerning alleged war crimes by Australian forces in Afghanistan, was conditionally released from prison on Thursday after serving 27 months behind bars.
In 2024, McBride was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for stealing classified Defence Ministry documents and providing them to journalists. He has served the 27-month non-parole period of his sentence and will now serve the remaining three years in the community under specific conditions and supervision.
Based on the documents leaked by McBride, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) published an investigative series titled The Afghan Files. The reports highlighted allegations of unlawful killings and other misconduct by Australian forces in Afghanistan.
Following his release, McBride announced that he had been diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer, which doctors have determined to be treatable, and that he is scheduled to undergo surgery. He thanked his family and supporters, as well as Australian Attorney-General Michelle Rowland, for his conditional release.
A number of human rights, whistleblowing, and transparency advocates have welcomed his release and described McBride as a courageous whistleblower who played an important role in exposing critical information about the war in Afghanistan.
