The European Union says that Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, underscoring the critical importance of providing adequate healthcare services for mothers and newborns.
In a post on X on Sunday, 19 July, the EU said it had jointly visited a midwife-led maternity care center in Logar Province together with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The EU added that the facility operates with its financial support and that trained midwives provide safe maternal and newborn care services there.
The provision of antenatal care and skilled care during childbirth is among the key interventions that can help reduce maternal and newborn mortality.
International health organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the state of maternal and child health in Afghanistan and have emphasized the need to expand healthcare services in this sector.
