Following reports of the arrest of a number of female protesters and their supporters, as well as casualties resulting from gunfire during recent demonstrations against the detention of women in Herat Province, the Taliban’s Department of Information and Culture in Herat held a meeting with social media activists.
According to an official statement, the meeting was convened to enhance public awareness, improve the coverage of events, and strengthen communication between the public and government institutions.
Officials from the Herat Department of Information and Culture emphasized that social media serves as an important platform for disseminating news and information. They stated that cooperation with social media activists can play a significant role in promoting cultural values, preserving local identity, and highlighting the achievements of society.
The statement further noted that expanding cooperation between social media activists and relevant institutions, exchanging views, and making effective use of existing resources were among the key topics discussed during the meeting.
The meeting took place at a time when videos showing security forces opening fire during the recent protests in Herat had circulated widely on social media, prompting extensive domestic and international reactions.
A number of human rights activists and organizations have also alleged that women and other protesters were subjected to mistreatment during the demonstrations, and they have called for justice and protection for those affected.
Meanwhile, following the widespread circulation of videos related to these incidents on social media, reports have emerged claiming that the Taliban leader has ordered the collection and destruction of smartphones.
