Summary

Members of Iran’s Parliamentary Economic Commission say Afghanistan is the second-largest market for Iran’s non-oil exports, with annual trade between the two countries exceeding $3 billion.

According to the Iranian state news agency IRNA, members of the Parliamentary Economic Commission made the remarks during a visit to the Dogharoon border crossing, noting that Afghan traders have increased their investments in Iran in recent years.

Moteki, a member of the commission, said the Iranian government places special emphasis on supporting both domestic and foreign investors, a policy that has expanded investment opportunities across different parts of the country.

Mehdi Taghiani, deputy head of Iran’s Parliamentary Economic Commission, said the Dogharoon Free Trade-Industrial Zone is one of Iran’s key economic hubs and serves as an important gateway for Afghanistan’s imports and re-exports.

He added that the high volume of trade between Iran and Afghanistan through Dogharoon underscores the strategic importance of the border crossing, and that increased investment could transform the area into one of Iran’s leading free economic zones.

Meanwhile, Hossein Jamshidi, the governor of Taybad, said more than 1,200 Iranian and foreign cargo trucks cross the Islam Qala and Dogharoon border crossings each day. However, he noted that the lack of certain infrastructure and facilities in Afghanistan occasionally has a negative impact on trade activities.
