Summary

Fawzia Koofi, a former member of the Afghan Parliament under the previous republican government, says that the Taliban have begun arresting a number of civilians, including children, following the attack and brief fall of Yaftal-e Payin district in Badakhshan province.

Koofi wrote on her X account on Friday (26 Saratan) that the Taliban are accusing these individuals of allegedly assisting the attackers in the fall of Yaftal district. She said that the detention of innocent civilians and the use of pressure tactics would not only fail to resolve the issue but could also produce the opposite outcome.

She added that the more pressure the Taliban place on the people, the stronger the public’s determination for freedom and the right to shape their own destiny will become.

Meanwhile, the Taliban’s security command in Badakhshan has also confirmed that a number of people were arrested following the attack on the Yaftal district centre. The Taliban stated that those detained are being investigated and questioned in connection with the incident.

The arrests took place after a newly formed armed group called “Sepahiyan-e Mihan” launched an attack on Yaftal-e Payin district in Badakhshan on Friday morning and briefly took control of the district. The group claimed that it had seized the district building, disarmed Taliban fighters, and raised its own flag. However, the Taliban later announced that they had retaken control of the district.
