Summary

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban, says Afghans should be grateful for the sacrifices made by Taliban members in the effort to force foreign troops out of Afghanistan and should support the group’s government.

In a recent video message, Mujahid described August 15 (24 Asad) as the Taliban’s “Day of Victory,” saying the date would be written in Afghanistan’s history in “golden letters.”

He emphasized that Afghans should remain committed to the Taliban’s government and support it. Mujahid said Taliban members had made sacrifices to expel foreign forces and that, in recognition of those sacrifices, the people should “stand firmly” with the Taliban.

The Taliban are marking the fifth anniversary of their return to power as Afghanistan continues to face widespread humanitarian and economic challenges. Since the Taliban’s takeover, Afghanistan’s international engagement has also been significantly restricted, and Russia remains the only country to have formally recognized the Taliban government.

At the same time, the Taliban government’s policies on human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls, have faced widespread criticism. According to United Nations data, millions of people in Afghanistan are experiencing severe food insecurity.
