Taliban reaffirms ban on all demonstrations in Afghanistan.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban, said at a press conference on Wednesday that demonstrations are a practice associated with societies that have separate legal frameworks and democratic systems, and that such a method of protest does not exist under an Islamic system.
Mujahid added that under an Islamic system, complaints and grievances should be pursued and addressed by approaching the relevant institutions. He emphasized that individuals seeking to raise demands or voice objections should refer to the responsible authorities.
The Taliban spokesperson also described demonstrations as a cause of wasted time, property damage, disorder, and lawlessness, and said that the ban on demonstrations has been incorporated into the group’s new police law.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Justice recently published the “Police law,” which officials say was drafted in accordance with Islamic Sharia and sets out regulations governing the duties and powers of the police.
Article 50 of the law states: “All demonstrations within the territory of Afghanistan are prohibited.” Under this provision, demonstrations are banned throughout Afghanistan.
The Taliban spokesperson’s remarks come as the group has imposed sweeping restrictions on protests and public gatherings since returning to power in Afghanistan.
