The national resistance front has announced that two of its commanders, Shamsuddin and Commander Baba, were killed in a surprise Taliban ambush in the Hindu Kush mountains.
The front confirmed the deaths of the two commanders in a statement late Saturday (August 29), describing their deaths as a “major loss” in the struggle for the country’s freedom.
A day earlier, the Taliban had claimed that they killed four members of the National Resistance Front in the Chaharsai area of Nahrin district in Baghlan province and the Farghambul area of Khost district. The Taliban also identified Shamsuddin and Commander Baba among those killed.
In its statement, the National Resistance Front said the two commanders had fought against the Taliban over the past five years, particularly in the snow-covered and rugged mountainous areas of the Hindu Kush.
According to the front, the two commanders kept the “torch of freedom” burning during this period and were regarded as “symbols” of resistance by the Afghan people.
The National Resistance Front expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of its commanders but stressed that their deaths would further strengthen the front’s determination to continue its struggle against the Taliban.
The front said it would follow in the footsteps of Shamsuddin and Commander Baba “with full courage.”
The announcement comes after the Taliban last week killed another prominent National Resistance Front commander, Hasib Qowai Markaz, along with three of his associates in an ambush in the Salang area.
Armed opposition groups continue to carry out attacks and engage in clashes against the Taliban in Afghanistan. According to recent reports, anti-Taliban groups, including the National Resistance Front, the Afghanistan Freedom Front, and the United Front, have carried out at least 50 attacks in various provinces over the past month.
