Former Afghan foreign minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta says that even a century after King Amanullah Khan began efforts to advance the country through development, the rule of law, and reforms, serious opposition to progress and social justice still exists in Afghanistan.
In a post on X marking Afghanistan’s Independence Day, Spanta wrote that the era of King Amanullah Khan and his like-minded reformists was a “proud chapter” in Afghanistan’s pursuit of development and the rule of law. However, he said the process ultimately faced defeat within the country in the face of “backward-looking ideas.”
He said that despite the passage of 100 years, a “deep and alarming hostility” toward progress, the rule of law, and social justice continues to persist in Afghanistan.
Spanta added that the questions raised at the time amid the struggle between progress and backward thinking remain relevant today, with even greater intensity.
According to Spanta, Afghan men and women have the right to decide their own destiny.
