The Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) says that currently eight Afghan journalists are held in Taliban prisons, and the situation for the media is increasingly moving toward greater restrictions.
In a press release published on Sunday, 20th of Ghway, AMSO stated that, according to confirmations from the journalists’ family members, last Thursday, Mansoor Niazi, a journalist from the private media outlet “Tolo News,” and last night, another journalist from the same media, Imran Danish, were arrested in Kabul.
The organization emphasized that the lack of a clear legal framework for media in Afghanistan has led to the fact that journalists’ arrests are often carried out based on arbitrary actions by the Taliban’s intelligence agencies.
According to AMSO, the arrest of these two journalists demonstrates that there is no guarantee for the safety of journalists and media in Afghanistan, and even media outlets that try to align their activities with the current conditions are not safe from pressures and threats.
AMSO has warned that the continuation of this situation could expose the country’s media environment to even stricter restrictions and further undermine the work of independent media.
The organization has called on international bodies to respond seriously to the recent arrests of journalists and the absence of a legal framework for media activities in Afghanistan.
