Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada has dismissed Ahmadullah Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Director of Information and Culture in Herat province, from his position. Ahmadullah Muttaqi is the brother of Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and had served in the role for several years.
According to sources, the reason for Ahmadullah Muttaqi’s dismissal has not yet been disclosed. Atiqullah Azizi, the Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture’s Deputy Minister for Arts and Culture, has been appointed as the new Director of Information and Culture for Herat.
It also remains unclear whether Ahmadullah Muttaqi will be assigned to another position.
The leadership change comes as Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has been in Qatar for about a week and has yet to return to Kabul. According to sources, he traveled to Doha to attend events related to the death of Qatar’s former Emir but later extended his stay in the country.
Sources also say that Amir Khan Muttaqi is seeking to renew his previous residency permit in Qatar and is undergoing treatment there for an eye condition.
