The Taliban-run High Commission for Addressing the Problems of Returning Migrants says that residential plots of land were distributed to 4,022 returnees over the past month.
According to the commission’s report, this brings the total number of residential plots distributed to returning migrants so far to 71,817.
Of the plots distributed last month, 2,614 were in Nangarhar, 916 in Faryab, 172 in Nimroz, 120 in Bamyan, and 100 each in Kunar and Samangan provinces.
The commission said that the distribution of land to returning migrants is continuing.
The development comes as a growing wave of migrant returns from neighboring countries has heightened concerns over the humanitarian situation and a shortage of shelter. Some returnees, particularly those deported from Pakistan and Iran, have complained about a lack of housing and employment opportunities, while some are still living in camps.
Despite the establishment of several settlements and designated areas for returning migrants, reports indicate that economic hardship and a lack of shelter have driven some families to attempt to leave Afghanistan again through irregular routes.
