In Afghanistan, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs, to discuss a proposal for the construction of standardized, high-speed highways and expressways.
Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban, wrote on X on Tuesday that the meeting reviewed a proposal to construct a standardized, high-speed road network across the country, with the participation of representatives from relevant ministries and government institutions, as well as technical experts.
According to Fitrat, the meeting also reached the necessary decisions regarding the preparation of the proposal and the construction of standardized roads.
However, the Taliban have not yet announced when the practical work on the construction of the expressway will begin. They have also not provided details about the project’s estimated cost, proposed route, or sources of funding.
The lack of standardized, high-capacity highways in Afghanistan is considered one of the major factors contributing to traffic problems and road accidents. Almost every day, reports emerge from different parts of the country of people being killed or injured in vehicle collisions and other traffic accidents.
