A source in Nangarhar reported that Taliban inspectors from the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice have arrested Azizullah Aziz, a local journalist and teacher, from his home in the Shinwar greater district.
According to the source, a music gathering was taking place at Aziz’s residence last night when Taliban inspectors raided the house and detained several individuals, including him. Reports indicate that the other detainees were subsequently released, but Azizullah Aziz remains in Taliban custody.
The Taliban have not yet issued an official statement regarding the arrest.
Since August 2021, the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on media, journalists, and artistic activities. According to United Nations reports, journalists in Afghanistan face arbitrary arrests, threats, violence, and censorship, while the Taliban’s "Virtue and Vice" law strictly prohibits the playing and listening to music.
