United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Damascus, the capital of Syria, on an official visit on Saturday, July 25. Syria's state news agency reported that the interim president of Syria, Ahmed Sharaa, received the UN Chief at the presidential palace.
Upon his arrival, Guterres emphasized the United Nations' commitment to supporting the Syrian people during the current critical period. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, he noted that the purpose of his visit is to express solidarity with the people of Syria and to rally greater international support for the country.
"I have just arrived in Damascus on a mission of solidarity," the UN Secretary-General wrote. "My message is clear: the United Nations stands with Syria at this critical moment, and I urge the international community to spare no effort in supporting the Syrian people."
Guterres highlighted the main objectives of his visit as demonstrating solidarity with the Syrian people, reviewing the humanitarian crisis, and emphasizing the necessity of achieving sustainable solutions to foster peace and stability in the country.
The visit comes as Syria continues to face widespread political challenges, a severe economic crisis, and a dire humanitarian situation after more than a decade of war and conflict, with millions of citizens still in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
The United Nations has repeatedly called on the international community to step up efforts to end Syria's prolonged crisis by increasing humanitarian aid, protecting civilians, and supporting political processes.
According to reports, this marks António Guterres's first visit to Syria since assuming office as UN Secretary-General.
