Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, has reported that Dan Driscoll, the U.S. Secretary of the Army, has submitted his resignation to the White House following months of disagreements and tensions with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Driscoll, who according to U.S. officials is considered a close ally of Vice President J.D. Vance, is the latest senior Pentagon official to leave his position or come under pressure during Hegseth’s tenure.
It remains unclear, however, whether the White House has accepted Driscoll’s resignation. The U.S. Army has so far declined to provide an official comment on the report.
The development comes as the United States remains engaged in a war with Iran, with thousands of U.S. Army troops deployed across various locations in the Middle East.
One source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Driscoll had raised concerns with the administration about the Army’s transformation efforts and level of readiness. He reportedly believed that Hegseth’s dismissal of generals responsible for implementing those initiatives had undermined the reform process.
According to sources familiar with the matter, tensions between the two officials intensified following the dismissal of Randy George, the Army Chief of Staff, as well as the blocking of promotions for a number of senior commanders.
Driscoll had served as Secretary of the Army since February 2025 and was an advocate of reforming the military procurement system, improving the efficiency of defense spending, and reducing the Army’s reliance on major defense contractors.
At one point, he was also selected by the Donald Trump administration to participate in negotiations related to the Russia-Ukraine war.
In response to reports of Driscoll’s resignation, the White House, without confirming or denying whether it had been accepted, praised his performance and described him as an effective leader who had helped implement the administration’s agenda, strengthen Army readiness, and contribute to diplomatic and military missions.
