Perhaps Haji Qurban believed that his wedding ceremony, like many similar events in previous years, would remain within the familiar boundaries of family and village life. However, the release of a few photos and videos on social media was enough to turn the ceremony into one of the most widely discussed topics in Afghanistan, drawing significant attention from users.
What placed this marriage at the center of public attention was not only the considerable age difference between the bride and groom, but also the timing and circumstances in which the event took place. Afghanistan today faces widespread restrictions on girls’ education, women’s participation in public life, and other issues related to women’s rights. As a result, any event connected to these matters is followed with greater sensitivity and public interest.
As the discussion continued, Haji Qurban’s strong reaction to the criticism directed at him did little to bring the controversy to an end.
