In Nangarhar, Mohammad Noman, head of Pakistani students, said that the Pakistani government and Taliban authorities on Saturday allowed the first group of 68 Pakistani medical students to enter Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing and resume their medical studies.
According to him, the decision was made following continuous requests and appeals from Pakistani students. He added that the list of 68 students was submitted on Friday evening in Jalalabad to Shafqatullah, the Pakistani Consul General, who then forwarded it to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mohammad Noman said that Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, took immediate steps to help resolve the students’ issue after receiving the request. He added that Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani, Pakistan’s ambassador to Kabul, also played an important role in facilitating the process.
According to available information, more than 1,000 Pakistani students from tribal areas and various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are currently studying at universities and higher education institutions across Nangarhar Province.
The development comes as the Torkham border crossing has remained closed to regular movement for the past ten months, with only Afghan refugees being allowed to cross.
