Elaheh Ehrar, a writer, human rights activist, and a prominent figure within the Afghan immigrant community in the United States, has announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.
In a statement released on Friday, July 3, she said that if elected to Congress, she would prioritize expanding justice, creating economic opportunities, improving the education system, and strengthening social cohesion.
In recent years, Ahrar has been active in the fields of human rights, education, equality, and immigrant advocacy, and is considered one of the well-known figures in the Afghan diaspora community in the United States.
Her announcement comes at a time when women in Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, continue to face extensive restrictions in education, employment, and public participation.
Virginia’s 7th Congressional District is considered one of the key and competitive districts in U.S. House elections, with the congressional elections scheduled to take place in November 2026.
