Gordon Brown, the former prime minister of the United Kingdom and the United Nations special envoy for global education, says that the situation of girls’ rights in Afghanistan requires greater attention and responsibility from the international community.
Brown said Afghanistan is the only country in the world where girls and women are barred from continuing their secondary and higher education, adding that the situation has deteriorated under Taliban rule.
Referring to the circumstances facing Afghan girls, he called on the international community to increase pressure on the Taliban to uphold girls’ educational and human rights.
Brown stressed that what is happening to girls in Afghanistan constitutes one of the most serious cases of violations of girls’ rights in the world.
UNICEF, in its latest report, has also stated that more than 2.6 million Afghan girls have been deprived of secondary education since 2021. The agency has called for the removal of educational restrictions and for girls and women to be allowed to return to schools and universities.
