The developments resulting from the Iran war, in addition to altering the regional balance of power in the Middle East, have also had unexpected consequences, including heightened security measures that led to the arrest of a well-known figure in international organized crime.
In this context, Daniel Kinahan, an Irish citizen who for years had been recognized as a key player in criminal networks, was arrested in mid-April in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This action came amid growing concerns about criminal groups exploiting regional instability.
Earlier, in April 2022, the U.S. government imposed sanctions on Kinahan and some members of his family, identifying them as leaders of the “Kinahan Cartel,” a network reportedly involved in drug and arms trafficking as well as violent acts, including murder.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury and law enforcement agencies in Europe, Daniel Kinahan is considered one of the most influential figures in organized crime in Europe. He also had connections to professional sports through a now-dissolved management company, working with over 100 boxers, including Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.
Nicola Tallent, an investigative journalist specializing in organized crime, stated that Kinahan’s arrest represents a significant blow to the network, though it does not mean its collapse. She emphasized that the cartel has a wide-reaching structure and substantial financial resources, and other individuals are likely prepared to continue its leadership.
The Irish police also said in a statement that the arrest highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating transnational organized crime. The operation was carried out after Irish authorities sent a legal file to the UAE concerning the alleged charges and Kinahan’s role in an international criminal network.
According to reports, the Dubai Prosecutor’s Office issued the arrest warrant based on this case, and legal procedures for extradition have begun. Daniel Kinahan was arrested less than 48 hours after the warrant was issued.
The Irish police further stated that the process is taking place under a bilateral extradition agreement between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates, a pact that plays a crucial role in executing joint operations against organized crime.
