The state-run media of North Korea (the Korean Central News Agency) has reported that Kim Jong Un, the country’s leader, stated that strengthening the country’s status as a nuclear power is the most effective response to the complex and unpredictable global security situation.
According to the report, Kim Jong Un made these remarks at a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party Central Committee, which began on Saturday and concluded on Monday.
He claimed that “unimaginable events” on a global scale are the result of what he described as the “selfishness of aggressive powers.” He added that United States policies also play a role in the tensions in Europe and the Middle East.
Kim Jong Un also accused the United States and South Korea of further destabilizing security on the Korean Peninsula by expanding their joint military and nuclear capabilities.
He said: “The continuous development of nuclear forces and the full implementation of the state’s nuclear status is the most correct way to respond to the unpredictable global military and political situation.”
According to the report, the North Korean leader also ordered an acceleration in the development of conventional weaponry, in addition to strengthening defense capabilities, and called for the construction of a 10,000-ton strategic missile-capable vessel.
The report adds that North Korea has long been subject to strict sanctions by the United Nations and the United States, yet it continues to advance its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, raising concerns among regional countries.
