Former Afghan Minister of Justice Fazl Ahmad Manawi has described the Taliban’s recent ban on bridal makeup and the use of perfume at wedding ceremonies as contrary to Islamic jurisprudence.
In a post on X, Manawi wrote that no individual or government has the authority to prohibit, through administrative decisions, matters that God and the Prophet Muhammad have not categorically declared forbidden.
He said that Islamic jurisprudence, particularly within the Hanafi school of thought, draws a clear distinction between a woman’s lawful adornment for her husband and displaying herself before non-mahram men, stressing that this distinction should be taken into account.
According to Manawi, personal interpretations and preferences regarding religious rulings should not be imposed on the public.
His remarks come after the Taliban banned bridal makeup and the use of perfume at wedding ceremonies, describing women’s adornment as contrary to Sharia.
