AfghanEvac, a US-based organisation supporting Afghan refugees, has warned that the administration of Donald Trump may implement a plan to arrest and deport a number of Afghan refugees to Afghanistan one week after the midterm elections.
Shawn VanDiver, the organisation’s president, has urged the US Congress to pass the Afghan Adjustment and Protection Act to prevent the deportation of Afghan refugees until July 2029.
In a statement released on Friday, AfghanEvac said the US government intends to transport a number of Afghan refugees to Afghanistan by air and hand them over to the Taliban.
According to VanDiver, the plan is reportedly scheduled for implementation one week after the elections, when public attention is expected to be largely focused on the election results and related developments.
He added that, under the proposed plan, some Afghan refugees could be arrested while voluntarily visiting immigration offices to complete administrative procedures.
The organisation also expressed concern over the human rights situation in Afghanistan, stating that women and girls continue to face restrictions under Taliban rule, former military personnel and government employees have been subjected to torture and killings, and the families of Afghans who worked alongside US forces remain at risk of persecution and harassment.
The head of AfghanEvac has called on the US Congress to take immediate action to protect Afghan refugees.
US officials have not yet commented on AfghanEvac’s allegations or the reported plan to deport Afghan refugees.
