Mitra Mehran, speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, called on the international community and the United Nations to refrain from any political or diplomatic engagement with the Taliban.
She emphasized that Afghan women and civil society must be included in all political and decision-making processes concerning the future of Afghanistan, and that robust support for women’s rights should remain a priority. She further stated that Afghan refugees must not be forcibly returned to Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
Mehran also stressed that international assistance should be increased to address the needs of the Afghan people; however, such aid should not be conditioned on the Taliban’s demands or political requirements.
She warned that as the Taliban’s control and authority continue to expand, the situation of Afghan women will further deteriorate, placing their rights under increasingly serious threat.
