Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has described the invitation of the Taliban to Europe and meetings with representatives of the group in Brussels as an insult to the people of Afghanistan, particularly women.
The European Commission has invited a Taliban delegation to Brussels in order to facilitate the deportation of Afghan migrants.
This invitation has sparked widespread criticism.
Richard Bennett wrote on X (Monday, 22 June ) that: “Meeting with the Taliban in Brussels would be an insult to Afghans, especially women.”
He has also criticized the acceleration of migrant deportations from Europe, stating that respect for human rights and refugee law is essential.
Bennett emphasized that “Afghans should not be returned to unsafe conditions.”
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has also criticized the European Union’s new regulations that allow for the expedited deportation of migrants.
In a statement, Türk said: “We are deeply disappointed by the adoption of new European Union regulations that enable the rapid deportation of migrants and asylum seekers.”
He called for respect for human rights and refugee law.
European countries are seeking to deport asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected.
Last month, the European Commission confirmed that it had invited a Taliban delegation to Brussels for technical discussions on migrant deportations.
Recently, the Belgian government also confirmed that it is reviewing the issuance of visas for members of the Taliban delegation.
