Shaharzad Akbar, the former Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, has stated that the international community’s efforts to normalize relations with the Taliban amount to accepting the group’s anti-women policies.
In her latest remarks, she said that Afghan women and girls are currently fighting on multiple fronts to defend their rights. According to Akbar, one of the most significant fronts is against European governments that portray themselves as champions of human rights and women’s dignity, yet in practice pursue policies aimed at normalizing the Taliban.
Akbar warned that the gradual acceptance of the Taliban’s conduct and policies would have severe consequences for the lives and future of Afghan women. She called on the international community, particularly European countries, to take the rights and demands of Afghan women seriously and to refrain from efforts to normalize the Taliban.
