Richard Lindsay has expressed concern over the Taliban’s approval and endorsement of the “Regulation on Separation of Spouses” and has called for its repeal.
The UK’s special representative, in a message posted on the social media platform X, described the regulation as another “cruel measure” by the Taliban and stressed that Afghan women and girls deserve equality in all aspects of life.
The “Regulation on Separation of Spouses,” approved and endorsed by Hibatullah Akhundzada, was recently published by the Taliban’s Ministry of Justice.
According to reports, the regulation implicitly recognizes child marriage and introduces differences and discrimination between women and men regarding divorce rights.
Earlier, the UK Deputy Foreign Secretary for the Middle East and North Africa had also said that he was “horrified” by the approval of the regulation, which, according to him, facilitates child marriage.
The publication of this regulation has triggered widespread domestic and international reactions. UN Women has also stated that the regulation further undermines the rights, freedoms, and security of Afghan women and girls.
