Summary

Local sources in Kunar province say that tribal elders from this province and Bajaur District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, held a joint meeting calling for a ceasefire and an end to clashes between the Taliban and Pakistan.

According to these sources, the meeting was held on Monday evening, 14th of Sawr, in the “Nawa Pass” area of Kunar province. During the gathering, representatives and elders from both sides discussed the security situation and the ongoing border tensions.

The sources add that after the meeting, the participants issued a statement urging Pakistani forces and the Taliban to stop firing at each other and to cease targeting civilian homes, while also facilitating the return of displaced people to their original areas.

According to available information, the tribal elders from Kunar attended the meeting with Taliban permission, and it was agreed that the outcomes of such meetings would be reviewed every two months.

Meanwhile, Taliban and Pakistani officials have not yet made any official comments regarding this meeting.

The meeting comes as Pakistani attacks on certain areas of Kunar province continue. In the most recent incident, during a night attack on Dangam district, Taliban sources reported that at least three people were killed and 14 others injured.

Sources also noted that about three weeks ago, tribal elders from both sides of the border held a similar meeting and called for a halt to the clashes. Despite these efforts, border tensions between the two sides continue.
