Afghanistan’s Taliban-run Ministry of Interior has announced that police forces under its command in Takhar Province seized 107 kilograms of opium and arrested two individuals on charges of trafficking the narcotics.
According to a statement released by the ministry on Thursday, the 107 kilograms of opium had been expertly concealed inside a vehicle. The statement said the suspects were attempting to transport the shipment to an undisclosed destination.
The ministry added that the two detainees are currently in the custody of Taliban security forces. According to the Taliban police command in Takhar, the case will be referred to the relevant judicial and prosecutorial authorities after the completion of the preliminary investigation.
The seizure comes despite repeated claims by the Taliban in recent months that poppy cultivation and opium production have been completely eradicated across Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in its World Drug Report 2026 released on June 26, stated that Afghanistan’s existing opium stockpiles are expected to continue supplying the market through the end of this year. The report also noted that the unprecedented decline in opium production in Afghanistan, coupled with the expansion of synthetic opioids, is reshaping the global illicit drug market.
