Fourteen newborns have died following a fire in the maternity ward of PIMS Hospital in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 26, at the hospital.
According to reports, 15 newborns were present in the maternity ward when the fire broke out. Hospital staff managed to evacuate and rescue only one of the infants.
Following the incident, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the fire and an examination of the factors that contributed to the tragedy.
The prime minister also directed the relevant authorities to take strict legal action against any individual or institution found to have been negligent or responsible for the incident.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and its cause. The findings of the investigation are expected to provide further information about how the incident occurred and determine any potential responsibility.
