In Lahore, the capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, 78 police officers, including the head of the Ghaziabad Police Station, have been suspended in connection with an alleged sexual assault case involving a young woman with an intellectual disability.
According to the registered case, the victim’s father said his approximately 19- to 20-year-old daughter, who has an intellectual disability, left home on Sunday but did not return for an extended period. He said someone later informed the family that a police officer, dressed in civilian clothes, had taken the young woman away.
The father further stated that when the family went to the police station, they were told that his daughter had already returned home. He said that after she arrived home, she was in tears and alleged that a police officer had sexually assaulted her by force.
In a statement posted on its official X account, Lahore Police said that, in connection with the Ghaziabad incident, the Deputy Inspector General (Operations) had suspended the head of the police station, other officials, and all 78 police personnel assigned to the station due to negligence and inadequate supervision.
The Lahore Police leadership emphasized that negligence, poor oversight, and irresponsible conduct would not be tolerated and that a full and transparent investigation into the incident would be carried out.
Meanwhile, Hina Parvez Butt, a member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), described the incident as deeply distressing and called for the individual responsible to be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
