The Afghanistan War Commission announced on Thursday that the mandate of the body has been extended for another year. The commission said its final report on the 20-year U.S. war in Afghanistan is expected to be released in September 2027. According to the commission, the extension will provide additional time to complete outstanding areas of its review.
The commission said the extension of its mandate will allow it sufficient time to conduct a comprehensive, independent, and rigorous assessment of the 20-year U.S. war in Afghanistan. The purpose of the extension, it said, is to complete the review process and provide a documented account of how the war was conducted and its consequences.
The Afghanistan War Commission also said the extension will enable its members to pursue the review with greater care and depth. The commission added that important remaining research will be completed and that the final report will be prepared and presented on the basis of findings, credible evidence, and carefully considered recommendations.
Shamila Chaudhary and Colin Jackson, co-chairs of the Afghanistan War Commission, said in a joint statement on Thursday, August 27, that members of both the Democratic and Republican parties in the House of Representatives and Senate had agreed to extend the commission’s mandate.
The commission’s co-chairs said the broad, bipartisan support was crucial to ensuring the full implementation of the mandate entrusted to the body by Congress. They emphasized that the extension would provide additional time to complete the necessary reviews and prepare the final report.
The co-chairs of the Afghanistan War Commission added that in the coming months, they will work with Congress and the U.S. government to bring the review of the war to completion. They also said the goal of the process is to provide future U.S. leaders with an opportunity to draw on the lessons and findings emerging from the war in Afghanistan.
