Summary

The Taliban’s Nangarhar Security Command says that an unexploded ammunition blast in the Goshta district of the province has killed one child and injured another.

Sayed Taib Hammad, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Nangarhar Security Command, said that the explosion occurred this morning (Thursday, May 15) in the village of Durkhil in Goshta district.

He added that the children had gone near a mountain to graze their livestock, and upon encountering unexploded ammunition, it detonated, resulting in one child killed and another injured.

The spokesperson said that the injured child has been taken to the Goshta district hospital and that their condition is stable.

Explosions from unexploded ordnance and landmines have repeatedly claimed the lives of children and civilians in Afghanistan.

Decades of war have left parts of Afghanistan contaminated with mines and explosive remnants. According to United Nations statistics, 3.3 million people in Afghanistan live within a one-kilometer radius of mine- and explosive-contaminated areas.
