Former Pakistani diplomat Asif Durrani has said that a stable Afghanistan is of vital importance to Pakistan’s national interests, and that peaceful relations between the two countries are essential for regional stability.
He stated that the existing problems between the Taliban and Pakistan should be resolved through dialogue, coordination, and practical cooperation. According to him, both sides need each other because of shared security and economic challenges, and they should choose engagement instead of violence.
Asif Durrani emphasized that no side can establish lasting peace solely through airstrikes, accusations, or the closure of borders and trade, as such policies only worsen the problems.
On the other hand, some analysts claim that Pakistan played a role in shaping the situation in Afghanistan during the past twenty years of war, and that the current situation later emerged through interactions with international actors. They add that Islamabad’s statements about a “stable Afghanistan” are not always considered trustworthy.
