Summary

The British government has updated the identity information and passport details of five Taliban officials on its sanctions list. The changes affect Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister; Amir Khan Muttaqi, the group’s Foreign Minister; Abdul Haq Wasiq, the head of intelligence; Khairullah Khairkhwa, the governor of Maidan Wardak; and Abdul Latif Mansoor, the Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development.

In a statement, the UK Foreign Office said the amendments were made on Friday, 30 October, and included the addition of at least one new passport number for each of the five officials. Amir Khan Muttaqi had two new passport numbers added, one of which was issued on 5 August this year and is valid until 2031.

According to the information released, the previous passports of the other four officials also expired in October this year.

The UK Foreign Office described the changes as administrative updates to the personal details of individuals subject to sanctions, stressing that they do not constitute new sanctions or any change to the existing sanctions status of these Taliban officials.

According to figures published by the British government in December 2024, a total of 135 individuals linked to the Taliban and five organisations are listed under the United Nations sanctions regime, which the UK also enforces.

These sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans on individuals designated under the list.
