Following reports that a young man had been beaten and residents had staged a protest against local Taliban forces in Waigal district of Nuristan province, the Taliban’s provincial authorities have denied the incident, claiming that their forces did not mistreat anyone.
According to reports, residents of Waigal district staged a protest against local Taliban forces in response to the beating of a young man. The young man was reportedly assaulted for using headphones, while protesters were also subjected to violence by the Taliban.
Following the publication of these reports, the Nuristan governor’s office issued a statement dismissing as false claims that a young man had been arrested and beaten on charges of listening to music. It said Taliban forces had not mistreated anyone.
The statement made no mention of the reported protest but emphasised that Taliban officials responsible for the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice have the right to guide the public and that they carry out this duty gently and peacefully.
This comes amid previous reports in recent years of complaints from residents in various provinces about the conduct of the Taliban’s morality enforcement officials.
