Cristiano Ronaldo, in Portugal’s second match of the 2026 World Cup against Uzbekistan, set a new record in the history of the tournament, once again showcasing his abilities at the highest level.
Following Portugal’s draw in their opening match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, criticism emerged in the media and among football analysts regarding Ronaldo’s performance. Some critics argued that the veteran star was no longer a suitable option for Portugal’s starting lineup at the World Cup.
However, Ronaldo delivered a decisive response in his team’s second match, scoring against Uzbekistan and setting a historic milestone. He is now the only player in World Cup history to have scored in six different editions of the tournament.
The Portugal captain had previously found the net in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups, and with his goal in the 2026 tournament, he extended this record to six consecutive editions.
Amid ongoing debates about Ronaldo’s place in the Portugal squad, Roberto Martínez also voiced his support for the experienced forward and emphasized his importance to the team’s success.
The Portugal head coach stated: “It makes no sense to leave out a goalscorer when you need goals. Ronaldo’s experience is extremely important for us. He can disrupt the opposition’s defensive structure and create opportunities for his teammates.”
Martínez also stressed that every player possesses unique qualities and abilities, but that in order to achieve optimal results in major competitions, having a player of Cristiano Ronaldo’s experience and quality is essential for the Portuguese national team.
Ronaldo’s latest record once again highlights his place in football history and demonstrates that the Portuguese star remains one of the most influential players at the highest level of international football.
