According to reports, a major fire at the Arghavan Shopping Center, located in Phase Four of Andisheh Town in Shahriar, in the southern suburbs of Tehran, has left at least 8 people dead and 36 injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening and quickly became one of the most damaging recent events.
Hours after the initial images of the fire were released, the governor of Shahriar, in his first statements, reported 3 fatalities. However, he emphasized that given the scale of the incident and the ongoing rescue operations, the number of victims could rise.
As the operations continued and further assessments were made, the death toll increased to 8 and the number of injured to 36. Reports indicate that the fire was so intense that a significant portion of the complex was destroyed.
The Arghavan Shopping Center is considered one of the major commercial hubs of the area, housing over 250 commercial units and 50 office units. The fire broke out on Tuesday evening, causing severe damage to the property.
According to domestic news agencies, the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Shahriar issued orders on Tuesday night for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. At the same time, the building’s developer was arrested and identification of the responsible parties has been initiated.
Images released from the scene show that the fire spread with high intensity, engulfing nearly all the commercial units in the complex and reducing them to ashes.
This incident occurs amid multiple reports in recent months of fires at commercial centers across Iran. Notably, there were fires at the old Rasht Bazaar during the Dey protests and a large fire at the Janat Market in the Janatabad area of Tehran in Bahman.
