Qatar’s Ministry of Interior announced that following an explosion at an industrial facility in Ras Laffan, at least 54 people were injured and 18 others remain missing.
In a statement released this morning (Monday, 22 June), the ministry said that search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
The explosion occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. last night inside a factory located in the Ras Laffan Industrial City.
The Ministry of Interior attributed the incident to a “technical malfunction.”
In its initial statement issued shortly after the explosion, the ministry reported that “no damage or leakage posing a threat to public safety has been detected.”
Ras Laffan, located about 60 kilometers north of Doha, the capital of Qatar, is a major industrial hub and is widely regarded as the backbone of the country’s oil and gas industry.
