One person was killed and eight others were injured after an explosive device detonated in the Makin Bazaar in Upper South Waziristan, part of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Pakistani police said that a member of the Peace Committee was among those affected by the incident.
According to police, unidentified individuals attached the explosive device to a motorcycle, which was detonated in the Makin Bazaar. The explosion occurred at around 10:45 a.m. on Friday, initially injuring nine people. One of the injured later died while being transported to a hospital.
Police said three members of the Peace Committee Inayatullah, Sharafat Khan, and Bhangi Khan were among those injured in the blast. The injured Peace Committee members were taken to Razmak Hospital for treatment, while the other victims received medical care at local health facilities.
The explosion damaged several shops in the market, destroying part of the goods and property inside them. Following the incident, police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to collect evidence and identify those responsible.
Police said an investigation into the explosion is underway and that various aspects of the incident are being examined to identify the perpetrators. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the security situation in Upper and Lower South Waziristan. Local residents have expressed concern in recent months over an increase in explosions, targeted killings, kidnappings, extortion of traders, and attacks on police and security forces.
Two days earlier, armed men attacked a member of the Peace Committee in the Sararogha area of Upper South Waziristan. A police officer was killed and the Peace Committee member was injured in that incident.
