Habib-ur-Rahman Hekmatyar, the son of the leader of the Islamic Party, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, has strongly criticized the Taliban, saying that their stance on the current Afghan refugee crisis has been indifferent and inhumane.
In a statement, he said that previously he had a joint council with the Taliban in Pakistan for Afghan refugees, and in those meetings it was always emphasized that Afghans even return their dead to the country and do not want to remain in a foreign land.
According to him, the repatriation of Afghan refugees should have been carried out gradually, systematically, and humanely so that people could return to their country with dignity and peace. He added that both governments should have taken the necessary measures in advance, but this did not happen.
Habib-ur-Rahman Hekmatyar stated that the Taliban had previously presented their reasons regarding the problems of refugees, but their statements did not align with the suffering and real problems of poor refugees.
He criticized some Taliban officials for speaking to refugees in a derogatory tone, saying: “What are you doing there?” He responded: “What have you done there for thirty years? Refugees are only living there to find a morsel of bread.”
According to him, thousands of Afghan families, including women, children, and the elderly, are currently spending days and nights along the roads in Torkham, waiting for long periods to cross.
Habib-ur-Rahman Hekmatyar attributed the main cause of this situation to the Taliban’s weak diplomacy, poor policies, and weak foreign relations. According to him, due to the Taliban’s policies, visas for Afghans have been restricted in many countries, and many patients do not have the opportunity to go abroad for treatment.
