Taliban interior minister Sirajuddin Haqqani says foreign forces were defeated as a result of the “sacrifices” made by Taliban suicide bombers.
Haqqani made the remarks at a gathering held in memory of suicide bombers from the Gilan district of Ghazni province. The Taliban have not officially disclosed the location of the gathering, but some sources said the event was organized to commemorate suicide bombers from Gilan district.
In his speech, Haqqani said that after a center for suicide attacks was established, Hayatullah Mohammad Ghaznawi and Abdul Manan were among the first individuals to join the center.
During the gathering, he asked Hayatullah Mohammad Ghaznawi to raise his hand and speak out, and then jokingly said: “He now wants the rank of general from me.”
Haqqani added: “It was decided that we would break their [foreign forces’] arrogance through the sacrifices of the istishhadi [suicide attackers].”
Taliban officials from Ghazni, family members of suicide bombers, and a number of local residents attended the gathering. Speakers claimed that during the former republican government, 65 people from Gilan district carried out suicide attacks.
According to the information provided, Hayatullah Mohammad Ghaznawi, a resident of Gilan district in Ghazni, did not carry out a suicide attack and was imprisoned for an extended period at Bagram prison.
Ghaznawi is also the brother of Mawlawi Mohammad Tahir Mubarez, the current deputy security chief of the Taliban’s Ghazni police command.
Sirajuddin Haqqani has previously attended gatherings in Gilan district commemorating suicide bombers.
