The Taliban says that the construction of the TAPI pipeline in Afghanistan has progressed by 25 kilometers, and work on another 120 kilometers has also been prepared. However, the limited progress of this project raises doubts about completing its 153-kilometer section by the end of 2026.
Hamidullah Fatrat, the deputy spokesperson for the Taliban, wrote on his X account on Tuesday that construction work on the project is going on in Herat province and described the progress as “remarkable.”
Available data shows that the project’s work in Afghanistan is still limited to the Torghundi area in Herat, and other sections of the route have not yet entered the implementation phase. About 16’3% of the 153-kilometer section of the project has been completed over the past four years.
The TAPI project, which is one of the major gas transfer plans in the region, aims to transport Turkmenistan’s gas through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India.
The TAPI project, proposed in the1370, gained momentum in 1382 with the support of the Asian Development Bank. Its construction began in Turkmenistan in 1394, and the Afghan section was inaugurated in 1396.
