Hundreds of former U.S. military and civilian officials have, in an open letter, urged President Donald Trump to halt the plan to transfer Afghan refugees from Qatar to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Sean Van Davor, head of the Afghan refugee advocacy organization “Afghan Evac,” announced on Thursday, 17th of Sawr, that the letter was signed by 600 former U.S. officials and nearly 100 organizations.
According to him, the signatories of the letter warned against transferring Afghan refugees especially former collaborators with U.S. forces to a country with an insecure security situation. They emphasized that these individuals should not be relocated to a place where their safety and future would be at risk.
Van Davor added that prominent figures such as Stanley McChrystal, former commander of the U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, and Mike Mullen, former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, also signed the letter.
Earlier, U.S. media had reported that the U.S. government was considering a plan to transfer Afghan refugees from Qatar to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to reports, the U.S. federal government, under strict immigration policies, has refused to allow these refugees to enter the United States. Many of these individuals had collaborated with U.S. forces during America’s military presence in Afghanistan.
