Seyed Mohammad Reza Hashemi, governor of Iran’s South Khorasan Province, said on Tuesday, 27 Asad, during a visit to the Mahirud–Farah transit route that Tehran has allocated more than €5.5 million to complete the 120-kilometre road. He said a significant portion of the route has been completed and is ready for use.
Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that during the visit, Hashemi met with Mawlawi Mohammad Mujahid, the Taliban-appointed governor of Farah. During the meeting, he said that expanding road links with neighbouring countries, particularly Afghanistan, is a priority for Iran.
Hashemi said the second section of the road, measuring 53 kilometres, has been completed and is ready for operation. He added that paving work on the route as far as Farah city has also been completed, while project officials are currently in the area to repair sections of the road that have been damaged in recent weeks.
Regarding the first section of the route, the South Khorasan governor said it is 64 kilometres long and was completed in previous years, but now requires repair and rehabilitation. He said plans for restoring this section have also been coordinated with Taliban officials in Farah.
Hashemi added that completing and upgrading the route could facilitate cross-border trade between Iran and Afghanistan and reduce the cost of transporting goods between the two countries.
The Mahirud–Farah road begins at Mahirud in Iran’s South Khorasan Province and extends to the city of Farah in Afghanistan. The route is 120 kilometres long in total and is considered an important transport and transit link between the two countries.
