Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid says the explosion at a school in western Kabul may have been carried out by ISIS or “affiliated elements.” He emphasized that an investigation into the incident is ongoing and that Taliban security forces are working to identify and arrest those responsible.

Mujahid said on Tuesday, 27 Asad, that according to preliminary information, a hand grenade was thrown into the school. He said the explosion injured around 25 students, whose injuries were reportedly minor.

The explosion occurred on Monday afternoon, 26 Asad, in the Dasht-e Barchi area near Shama Hedayat Private School in Mahdiya Township, in western Kabul. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.

However, information from hospital sources puts the number of injured at nearly 50, with most of those wounded reportedly being children and students. This figure differs from the number given by the Taliban spokesperson.

According to a list obtained by media outlets from a hospital in western Kabul, at least 19 people injured in the explosion were transferred to the facility for treatment. The list includes 14 girls between the ages of 9 and 14.

The Taliban said security investigations are continuing to determine how the explosion occurred and to identify those responsible. As of the publication of this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
