Mawlavi Attaullah Omari, the Taliban’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, has traveled to Belarus at the official invitation of the Belarusian government, heading a 13-member delegation to attend the second meeting of the Joint Commission for Economic and Trade Cooperation between Afghanistan and Belarus.
According to Afghanistan’s national broadcaster, the delegation departed for Minsk on Monday, 26 Asad (August 17). The meeting of the Joint Commission for Economic and Trade Cooperation is scheduled to be held with the participation of representatives from both countries.
The Afghan delegation includes the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock; Transport and Civil Aviation; Finance; Foreign Affairs; and Commerce. Representatives of several state-owned companies and the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office for Economic Affairs are also part of the delegation.
During the visit, Taliban officials are expected to hold discussions with Belarusian authorities on expanding economic and trade cooperation, strengthening bilateral economic relations, and creating new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.
Belarus is considered one of Russia’s closest allies and maintains extensive political and economic ties with Moscow. Russia is currently the only country to have formally recognized the Taliban administration.
The visit comes as the Taliban have in recent years sought to expand their economic and trade relations with various countries and create greater opportunities for Afghanistan’s economic and commercial engagement with countries both within and beyond the region.
